Case Study: Inside Science series
Client:
Creative Teaching Press
Timeframe:
July 2007 – November 2008

How to engage students’ interest in science? How to capture the imaginations of third, fourth and fifth graders in the United States? How to get fifth graders, in particular, absorbed in science, without putting up barriers for those experiencing reading challenges?

These were just some of the challenges US educational publisher Creative Teaching Press brought to Lift Education when CTP commissioned us to develop a new science series for American schools.

Inside Science is a series of 24 highly visual, educationally innovative and thoroughly engaging science books for grade 3–5 students in the United States. The resources are aligned with the national science education standards for American schools. To create these resources, we tapped into the combined talents of New Zealand and American writers, illustrators, editors, designers, reading-level consultants and science education experts.

And just how engaging is Inside Science? Well, did you know, for example, that a Tanzanian schoolboy, Erasto Mpemba, discovered that hot water freezes faster than cold water? If you don’t believe this, try making some ice blocks in the freezer unit of your fridge. Start with a tray of hot fruit juice and another tray of cold fruit juice. Put them into your freezer unit at the same time. Then compare the results – before you consume the ice blocks!
