Case Study: Educational activities for Genesis Energy’s Schoolgen Initiative
Client: Genesis Energy
Timeframe: June 2006 – August 2008

As a company, we are very interested in environmental education. That’s why we are excited to be developing educational activities for Genesis Energy’s Schoolgen initiative. The activities support teachers and students to learn about renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change.

The Schoolgen initiative helps selected primary and secondary schools install solar electricity generation systems on the roof of a building in their school. Genesis Energy wants to raise the awareness of schools and the wider community about renewable energy, climate change and energy efficiency.

Our brief was first to undertake a resource review and scoping exercise, to identify existing resources related to renewable energy and climate change. This review provided the basis for developing teaching activities for schools.

Along the way, we have continued to contribute to the strategic thinking about the Schoolgen resources, gathered feedback about the resources from teachers, and contributed to the redevelopment of the website and the extension of the resources in 2008, in response to the demand from schools to expand the programme. Schoolgen’s success can be measured by the fact that it has been expanded from the initial offer to just six schools in Auckland, to 50 schools nationwide.

Schoolgen is supported by the Minister for the Environment's Sustainable Management Fund.
