Another great year for the Elsie Locke Writing Prize!

The topic for 2018 was, “Life in a changed environment”. There were sinister robots, killer cows, polluted wastelands and so much more.

The winning entry stood out because it was a highly original take on the topic – and very funny. But enough beating around the bush – the winner of the 2018 Elsie Locke Writing Prize is:

Gemma Lovewell from Adventure School!

Gemma’s story, ‘S.O.S’ was quite unlike any other, and we’re all quite full of admiration! Congratulations, Gemma.

We would also like to congratulate six other writers, whose entries were outstanding:
– Manon Petit, Haitaitai Intermediate (‘Oceans Grey’)
– Izzi Anderson, Raroa Intermediate (‘No Survivors’)
– Amaya Colombick, Raumati South School (‘No Turning Point’)
– Anna Babington, Mount Pleasant School (‘Waiting for Matariki’)
– Stella Weston, Mokoia Intermediate (‘Just this Once’)
– Charlotte Ross-Graham, Palmerston North Intermediate (‘Finding Home’)

Want to read Gemma’s story?

‘S.O.S’ will be published in the Level 4 School Journal, November 2018. You’ll also be able to read it online (including here) in November.

Again, thank you to each student who submitted a story, and also to you teachers, who supported your students throughout the writing process.

See you next year!
