Since 2018, we have developed the Tautai Ake series for Matāeke o Akoakoga a Tokelau (the Tokelau Department of Education), with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia. The series includes 100 books in gagana Tokelau for use by students in Tokelau schools.
All the books are supported with listen-along audio versions recorded by fluent speakers of gagana Tokelau. A feature of some of the books is that they incorporate kakai (traditional stories) utilising a Tokelau understanding of how a story is structured and what a story ‘is’.
The production team at Lift works with a gagana Tokelau editorial and quality assurance team in Tokelau and in the recording studio. In 2020, we are scoping further resources for development.
